Hungry for Peace: positives and pitfalls of local truces and ceasefires in Syria

Executive Summary: Hungry for Peace: positives and pitfalls of local truces and ceasefires in Syria

Behind the images of blood and war in Syria, there exists among civilians both the desire for and the undeniable potential to achieve peace. Enabling Home-Grown Peace in Syria

Peace is possible in Syria if an integrated model combining bottom-up and top-down approaches to peace is adopted. Researchers from Madani and the LSE examined 35 locally-brokered ceasefires and deals in Syria to identify criteria for success and failure. The research draws an analogy with the international agreement on the removal of chemical weapons that enjoyed the support of all international and regional parties and the Government of Syria. It concludes that, just as it was possible to reach such an agreement, it is possible to reach peace deals in Syria if regional and international actors focus their support on the solution rather than on the parties to the conflict.
